Lesson 1
LESSON I – RELATING TO GOD (God acts on our behalf)

Where did everything come from?

Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator
of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable.
Isaiah 40:28

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and
void, and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over
the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God
saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called
the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were
the first day. Genesis 1:1-5

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over
the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over
all the creatures that move along the ground.” So God created man in his own image, in
the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:26-27

Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. And on the
seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day
from all His work which He had done. Genesis 2:1-2

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He
was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him
nothing was made that was made. In Him was light, and the life was the light of men.
And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. John 1:1-3

Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Hebrews 13:8

God always was. All else that exists He created: it didn’t all happen just by chance!

How can a person come to God?

Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came by the prophet’s own
interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from
God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. 2 Peter 1:20-21

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in
Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16
Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him
whom He sent." John 6:29

In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in
whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the
guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the
praise of His glory. Ephesians 1:13-14

…"Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the
remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:38

And this is the testimony; that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.
He who has the son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
1 John 5:11-12

…that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God
has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto
righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:9-11

…that at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of
Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in
the world. Ephesians 2:12

And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now
He has reconciled 22 in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and
blameless, and above reproach in His sight— Colossians 1:21-23

But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even
when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have
been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in
Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in
His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith,
and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God
prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:4-10

Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father
except through Me. John 14:6

If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has
been made well, let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the
name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead,
by Him this man stands here before you whole. This is the stone which was rejected by
you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone. Nor is there salvation in any
other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be
saved. Acts 4:9-12

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I
will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. To him who overcomes I will
grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on
His throne. Revelation 3:20-21

And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He
who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be
condemned.” Mark 16:15-16

"Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me
has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.
Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the
voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. John 5:24-25

The Holy Scriptures teach us that there is only one way to God. We must each receive
Jesus Christ as God’s only provision to be reunited with God and to receive eternal life.
What does this say about all religion, knowledge, and works of men?

What does God want with me?

The Lord looks down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there are any who
understand, who seek God. Psalm 14:2

God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does
not dwell in temples made with hands. Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though
He needs anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things. And He has made
from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has
determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings, so that they
should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He
is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also
some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’ Therefore, since we
are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or
silver or stone, something shaped by art and man’s devising. Truly, these times of
ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He
has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom
He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.
Acts 17:24-31

Seek the Lord, repent, turn from our own ways and believe in Him Whom He has sent.
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not
of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11

He fashions their hearts individually; He considers all their works. Psalm 33:15
Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground
apart from your Father’s will. But the very hairs of your head are numbered. Do not fear
therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. Matthew 10:29-31

For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was
in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Hebrews 4:15

Know that God loves you and cares about you individually and completely.

“And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all
your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first commandment. And the second,
like it, is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment
greater than these.” Mark 12:30-31

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that
you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have
love for one another. John 13:34-35

You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’
But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who
hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be
sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and
sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward
have you? Do not even tax gatherers do the same? And if you greet your brethren only,
what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? Therefore you
shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect. Matthew 5:43-45

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become
sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and
understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could
remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods
to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love; it profits me
nothing. 1 Corinthians 13:1-3

Love God above all else, and because he made and values all others: love your
neighbor as you love yourself. Not because you or they deserve love, but because He
loves us all.

He fashions their hearts individually; He considers all their works. Psalm 33:15

For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.
1 John 3:20

The Lord executes righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed. He made known
His ways to Moses, His acts to the children of Israel. The Lord is merciful and gracious,
slow to anger, and abounding in mercy. He will not always strive with us, nor will He
keep his anger forever. He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor punished us
according to our iniquities. For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His
mercy toward those who fear Him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has He
removed our transgressions from us. Psalm 103:6-12

Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that
every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
Therefore, by deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the
knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed,
being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through
faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; for all have
sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the
redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood,
through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had
passed over the sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time
His righteousness that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of
faith. Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the
law. Romans 3:19-23

Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of your name; and deliver us, and provide
atonement for our sins, for Your name’s sake! Psalm 79:9

Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His mercy,
to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine. Psalm 33:18

Woe to him who strives with his maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the
earth! Shall the clay say to him who forms it, ‘What are you making?’ Or shall your
handiwork say, ‘He has no hands’? Woe to him who says to his father, ‘What are you
begetting?’ Or to the woman, ‘What have you brought forth?’ Isaiah 45:9-10

I am the vine, you are the branches, He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit;
for without Me you can do nothing… John 15:5

Acknowledge that by yourself you can neither be restored nor can you accomplish any
good thing.

This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment,
that as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it. 2 John 1:6

So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not
know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by
bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.
Deuteronomy 8:3

As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear Him. For He knows our
frame; he remembers that we are dust. As for man, his days are like grass; as a flower of
the field, so he flourishes. For the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place
remembers it no more. But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on
those who fear Him, and His righteousness to children’s children, to such as keep His
covenant, and to those who remember His commandments to do them. Psalm 103:13-18

Know His Word and do His will.

The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him, in those who hope in His mercy.
Psalm 147:11

Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His mercy,
to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine. Psalm 33:18

For our heart shall rejoice in Him, because we have trusted in His holy name.
Psalm 33:21

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way.
Psalm 37:23

Blessed is the man who trusts in You! Psalm 84:7

In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in
your own eyes; Fear the Lord and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh and
strength to your bone. Proverbs 3:6-8

Trust in Him and He will bless you and direct your ways.

Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s
slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to
righteousness? Romans 6:16

He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked. 1 John 1:6

Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing, but keeping the commandments
of God is what matters. 1 Corinthians 7:19

Do not think that I have come to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to
destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away one jot
or one tittle (the smallest parts) will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.
Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so,
shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he
shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:17-19

Obey God in all things.

Teach me Your ways, O Lord; I will walk in Your truth; unite my heart to fear Your
name. I will praise You, O Lord, my God, with all my heart, and I will glorify Your
name forevermore, for great is Your mercy toward me, and you have delivered my soul
from the depths of Sheol. Psalm 86:11-13

Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit
of our lips, giving thanks to His name. Hebrews 13:15

Give thanks and praise to God always.

But let the righteous be glad: let them rejoice before God; yes, let them rejoice
exceedingly. Psalm 68:3

I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify Him with thanksgiving. This
also shall please the Lord better than an ox or bull, which has horns and hooves. The
humble shall see this and be glad; and you who seek God, your hearts shall live.
Psalm 69:30-32

Rejoice and be exceedingly glad in Him.

Also I say to you, whoever confesses Me before men, him the Son of Man will also
confess before the angels of God. But he who denies Me before men will be denied
before the angels of God. Luke 12:8-9

Confess God and Christ before men.

Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and
the Prophets. Matthew 7:12

The law of relationships (also called The Golden Rule)

Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to
you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it
will be opened. Matthew 7:7-8

Continually seek His will and His provision for everything in your life.

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light
(for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth). finding out what is
acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness,
but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done
by them in secret. But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for
whatever makes manifest is light. Therefore He says: ‘Awake, you who sleep, arise from
the dead, and Christ will give you light.’ Ephesians 5:8-14

Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in
uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. Let them
do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for
themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.
1 Timothy 6:17-19

Walk in Christ and trust in God, not in riches.

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.
For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the
Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. And let us not grow weary while doing
good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Therefore, as we have
opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.
Galatians 6:7-10

The law of the harvest

But let the righteous be glad: let them rejoice before God; yes, let them rejoice
exceedingly. Psalm 68:3

I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify Him with thanksgiving. This
also shall please the Lord better than an ox or bull, which has horns and hooves. The
humble shall see this and be glad; and you who seek God, your hearts shall live.
Psalm 69:30-32

Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands! Serve the Lord with gladness; come
before His presence with singing. Know that the Lord, He is God; it is He who has made
us, and not we ourselves; we are His people and the sheep of His pasture. Enter into His
gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless
His name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endures to all
generations. Psalm 100:1-5

For I desire mercy and not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God more than burnt
offerings. Hosea 6:6

Worship God freely and boldly, but humbly; remembering God desires a relationship
with you, not just your religious knowledge or practice or any self-righteousness.

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe
that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Hebrews 11:6
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift
of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in
Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in
them. Ephesians 2:8-10

Teach me, O Lord, the way of Your statutes, and I shall keep it to the end. Give me
understanding, and I shall keep Your law; indeed, I shall observe it with my whole heart.
Make me walk in the path of Your commandments, for I delight in it. Incline my heart to
Your testimonies, and not to covetousness. Turn away my eyes from looking at
worthless things, and revive me in Your way. Psalm 119:33-37

Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You. Blessed are You,
O Lord! Teach me Your statutes. With my lips I have declared all the judgments of
Your mouth. I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies, as much as in all riches. I
will meditate on Your precepts, and contemplate Your ways. I will delight myself in
Your statutes; I will not forget Your word. Psalm 119:11-16

But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
Hebrews 13:16

You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. James 2:24
For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. James 2:26

God loves you and desires only good for you. Remember that by the grace of God only
have you been saved and are being perfected, but remember also to be a doer of God’s
will and commandments, not a thinker or a teller only.
