Lesson 5
LESSON V – THE CHRIST RELATIONSHIP

What and who is Jesus, and what is His relationship to God?

You show loving-kindness to thousands, and repay the iniquity of the fathers into the
bosom of their children after them – the Great, the Mighty God, whose name is the Lord
of hosts. You are great in counsel and mighty in work, for your eyes are open to all the
ways of the sons of men, to give everyone according to his ways and according to the
fruit of his doings. Jeremiah 32:18-19

If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has
been made well, let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the
name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead,
by Him this man stands here before you whole. This is the stone which was rejected by
you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone. Nor is there salvation in any
other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be
saved. Acts 4:9-12

Tell and bring forth your case; Yes, let them take counsel together. Who has declared
this from ancient time? Who has told it from that time? Have not I, the Lord? And there
is no other God besides Me. A just God and a Savior; there is none besides Me. Look to
Me, and be saved, all you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other. I have
sworn by Myself; the word has gone out of My mouth in righteousness, and shall not
return, that to Me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall take an oath. Isaiah 45:21-23

For unto us a Child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government will be upon his
shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting
Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no
end, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with
judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts
will perform this. Isaiah 9:6-7

Most assuredly, I say to you; the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the
Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. For the Father loves
the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater
works than these, that you may marvel. For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to
them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will. For the Father judges no one, but has
committed all judgment to the Son, that all should honor the Son just as they honor the
Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
John 5:19-23

In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten
Son into the world, that we might live through Him. 1 John 4:9

Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me
has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.
Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the (spiritually) dead
will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. For as the Father has
life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, and has given Him
authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man. Do not marvel at this;
for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come
forth – those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done
evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge;
and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the
Father who sent Me. John 5:24-30

No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love
has been perfected in us. By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because
He has given us of His Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the
Son as Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides
in him, and he in God. 1 John 4:12-15

Jesus answered them, “I told you and you do not believe. The works that I do in My
Father’s name, they bear witness of Me. But you do not believe, because you are not of
My sheep, as I said to you. My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow
Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch
them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no
one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. I and My Father are one.”
John 10:25-30

‘Christ’ is not some universal force, an idea, or a religious movement, but rather the
term refers to the person of Jesus of Nazareth of the Bible. Jesus, the Christ of God, is
the second person of the Trinity: He is part of the One God. And Jesus is our only
provision for salvation and fellowship with God. About 2000 years ago, God, in His
infinite wisdom and mercy, took the form of a human and lived among us. Most people
think of the human person when we speak of the Jesus of the Bible, but this was only
one phase of the existence of Jesus. As Christians, we know Jesus primarily as the Son
of God, a title given to us in the Holy Scriptures. The Scriptures foretold that God
would judge all mankind: and the Scriptures also tell us that this will be performed
through Jesus, the Son of God. Thus, Jesus is God Himself, who came to us in human
form: truly God and truly human. There have been many prophets but there is only
one Savior of all mankind: Jesus. There is no other God, and no other human
manifestation ever has been, is now, or ever will be God.

When did Jesus have His beginning?

This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the
world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. However, for this reason I obtained mercy,
that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are
going to believe on Him for everlasting life. Now to the King eternal, immortal,
invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. 1
Timothy 1:15-17

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He
was in the beginning with God. John 1:1-2

John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who
comes after me is preferred before me for He was before me.’” And of His fullness we
have all received, and grace for grace. For the law was given through Moses, but grace
and truth came through Jesus Christ. John 1:15-17

For to which of the angels did he ever say: “You are My Son, today I have begotten
You?” And again: “I will be to Him a Father, and He shall be to Me a Son”? But when
He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: “Let all the angels of God worship
Him.” And of the angels He says: “Who makes His angels spirits and His ministers a
flame of fire.” But to the Son He says: “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; a
scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. You have loved righteousness
and hated lawlessness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of
gladness more than Your companions.” And: You Lord, in the beginning laid the
foundation of the earth. And the heavens are the work of Your hands. They will perish,
but You remain; and they will all grow old like a garment; like a cloak You will fold
them up, and they will be changed. But you are the same, and Your years will not fail.”
Hebrews 1:5-12

Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and
bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel… Isaiah 7:14

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to
Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Hold Spirit. Then
Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was
minded to put her away secretly. But while he thought about these things, behold, an
angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be
afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy
Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will
save His people from their sins.” So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was
spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child,
and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, God with
us.” Matthew 1:18-23

Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named
Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David.
The virgin’s name was Mary. And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice,
highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!” But when she
saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this
was. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with
God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call
His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord
God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of
Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.” Then Mary said to the angel,
“How can this be, since I do not know a man?” And the angel answered and said to her,
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you;
therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.”
Luke 1:26-35

Jesus was with God and Jesus was God before the heavens and the earth were created.
Jesus (God) is eternal: He always was, now is, and always will be. In the fullness of
time, the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity which is God, caused the virgin
Mary to conceive a child: God took human form and lived among us. Mary was told by
an angel to name Him Jesus, which means ‘Savior’. So Jesus existed prior to taking
human form and living among us to become our Savior.

What is my relationship to Jesus?

As our Creator

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and
female He created them. Genesis 1:27

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He
was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him
nothing was made that was made. John 1:1-3

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as
of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14

As our Savior

He came to His own, and His own did not receive him. But as many as received Him, to
them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:
who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of
God. John 1:10-13

Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also Himself likewise
took part of the same; that through death He might destroy him that had the power of
death, that is, the devil. Hebrews 2:14

Now Jesus and His disciples went out to the towns of Caesarea Philippi; and on the road
He asked His disciples, saying to them, “Who do men say that I am?” So they answered,
“John the Baptist; but some say, Elijah; and others one of the prophets.” He said to them,
“But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered and said to Him, “You are the Christ.”
Mark 8:27-29

But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Christ Jesus
might be given to them that believe. Galatians 3:22

This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the
world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. 1 Timothy 1:15

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a
lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his
mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his
generation? For he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my
people was he stricken. Isaiah 53:7-8

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth
in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16
Then he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem,
and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be
accomplished. For he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and
spitefully entreated, and spitted on: And they shall scourge him, and put him to death:
and the third day he shall rise again. Luke 18:31-33

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father,
but by me. John 14:6

For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:26

As our Lord

For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No
one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father,
He has declared Him. John 1:17-18

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God,
did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation,
taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in
appearance as a man, He humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death,
even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him
the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of
those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue
should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Philippians 2:5-11

Go therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the
father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I
have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.
Matthew 28:19-20

So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat
down at the right hand of God. Mark 16:10

For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body – whether Jews or Greeks, whether
slaves or free – and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. For in fact the body is
not one member but many. 1 Corinthians 12:13-14

And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him,
“Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not
seen and yet have believed.” John 20:28-29

Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. 1 Corinthians 12:27

And He is the head of the body the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the
dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. Colossians 1:18

As our Advocate

If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is,
sitting at the right hand of God. Colossians 3:1

So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who
deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, ‘Now salvation, and strength, and the
kingdom of our God and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our
brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.’
Revelation 12:9-10

My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone
sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is
the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.
1 John 2:1-2

But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. Therefore He is
also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always
lives to make intercession for them. For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is
holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the
heavens; who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His
own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up
Himself. For the law appoints as high priests men who have weakness, but the word of
the oath, which came after the law, appoints the Son who has been perfected forever.
Hebrews 7:24-28

As our Judge

I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living
and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word! Be ready in season
and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.
2 Timothy 4:1-2

…how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went
about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with
Him. And we are witnesses of all things which He did both in the land of the Jews and in
Jerusalem, whom they killed by hanging on a tree. Him God raised up on the third day,
and showed Him openly, not to all the people, but to witnesses chosen before by God,
even to us who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead. And He
commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is He who was ordained by
God to be Judge for the living and the dead. Acts 10:38-42

For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay,
straw, each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be
revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. If anyone’s
work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is
burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. Do you
not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If
anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy,
which temple you are. 1 Corinthians 3:11-15

When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will
sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and He will
separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. And He
will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to
those on His right hand, ‘Come you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared
for you from the foundation of the world…’ Matthew 25:31-33

Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the
everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels…’ Matthew 25:41

He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned
already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
John 3:18

As our Creator, we are His creation. The Bible tells us that “without Him was nothing
created that was created. As our Savior, Jesus took upon Himself the sins of the
world, and died in our place: providing the only means of salvation and reconciliation
to God. As our Lord, Jesus has commissioned us to take the message of His coming
(the Gospel) and His teachings to our neighbors and to the next generations. After His
resurrection, Jesus was resurrected by God the Father and was taken up into Heaven,
from where He now serves as the Head of His Body: the Church. As our Advocate,
Jesus sits at the right hand of God the Father, continually making intercession on our
behalf against the accusations of Satan. As our Judge, Jesus will give rewards to
believers, and will once and for all judge those who refuse to believe what God has said
about His Son.
