List your skills and
seek a job where
you can use them.
Self Evaluation
Before you can start thinking about the job you would want to spend
most of your life doing...

...it would be very good to sit down and take out a blank piece of paper.
On the left side of the paper start a list and title it, "
Skills".

Think deeply on everything you can do. Everything. I don't care if you are
a woman or a man, what race, what beliefs. Don't let anything stand in
the way of putting down everything you can do. If you can screw a light
bulb, put it down. If you can wash a car, put it down. If you can write a
novel, put it down. If you can draw, put it down, etc.

If you have computer
skills, definitely put them down. Use Microsoft
Word? Put it down. Excel? Put it down.

If you are a Christian, now is the time for you to look over the
skills you
have written down. I'll bet you have surprised yourself as to all the
things you can do, if you are honest. Now, ask God to give you a feeling
of drawing to those
skills He would like for you to use in your life work
for Him. This may take a minute, depending on how close you are to
Him.

If you are not a Christian, look over your
skills and choose those that
you think you would be comfortable using for the rest of your life. No
matter whether you are a Christian or not, even the world view is
changing that you can only find happiness in work if you realize the
work is to be the service to the community you live in and to serve
mankind with a professional ability and sincere respect.

Now, let's get real here. If you are homeless or about to be homeless,
right now an entry-level
job would put the food in the mouth and shelter
over the head. But, this
job is called "entry-level" for a reason. Actually, if
you can get by with just part-time, and use the rest of your time working
on a career that God or you choose, you can use your "entry-level" as a
pathway to that "dream
job".

Another part of that pathway is education. If, when looking over your
skills, you see that there are weaknesses that could be sharpened
with more education, take a moment to consider more education.

If you are having problems reading or writing, do not let pride stand in
the way of getting into a literacy program. Believe me, this will open all
kinds of doors closed to you now. It does not matter whether or not you
have a high school diploma. It was not your fault that teachers did not
wait for you to learn. Getting into a literacy program now will influence
the rest of your life.

Self - Evaluation:

Now that you have all of these things together, let's take a
self-evaluation.

So, why do we need a self-evaluation? When I was young, I asked the
same question. There was nothing more devastating to me than facing
myself. I no longer feel that way, even though now I am more limited
physically.

The hardest part of
self-evaluation is honesty. If you are a Christian,
you know that He knows every crack and cravis of His Creation, but He
wants you to open up to Him. And, if you practise opening up to Him
then you will be more honest when you face yourself in
self-evaluation.

The first attention should be with
attitude. Why do you want to work?
Are you working just to pay the bills? Are you looking for happiness in
the workplace? Are you looking for a sense of achievement? Do you
look forward to praise and glory for what you do?

Whether you are Christian or not, even the world is understanding that
attitude plays a large role in the type of job you will be ready for. Jobs
like: fast foods, tele marketing, and similar "entry-level"
jobs instill
competition, rewards for achievement, and constant stress to keep a
quota. These
jobs instill being first, fastest, less quality, more quantity.
They dehumanize and give a feeling of just being numbers and if the
numbers are not high enough, you are out.

Your
attitude is going to be driven by your motive. If your motive is to
just pay the bills, keep up, or surpass others possessions, then high
stress entry-
jobs may be what you are looking for.

If you are a Christian, before you think about what
job will be
appropriate, asking God to lead you to the
job He would like for you to
use as a service to Him will eliminate a lot of useless thinking on your
part. Not that God does not want you to think. Just the opposite. But,
when you go to
job opportunities, you will know whether or not this or
that
job will fit into God's plans for your life.
